Olá membros do conselho, estava ontem conversando no chat do English Experts e lá pelas tantas tocamos em um assunto beautiful para rotular homens. Então, para explicar eis um pequeno resumo de quando usar handsome e beautifull.
In truth Beautiful is the general descriptive word for anything that is very easy on the eye. Handsome is a form of beauty which is usually attributed to an attractive or beautiful man. Handsome encompasses magnificence, nobility & strength, as well as good bodily form and usually attractive facial features. Not just men but women who possess such qualities can also be described as handsome. This in no way means she’s ugly but quite the contrary as it refers to the strength and nobilty of her form. I’d say actress Sigourney Weaver is an example of a handsome woman. In the same way men can be described as pretty which is usually considered the female form of beauty which encompasses softness, meakness & grace. Hence the term Prettyboy.
To sum up
Beautiful/Beauty = general term for someone or something which is very attractive
Handsomeness, prettiness are types of beauty especially where humans are concerned
You can use “handsome” for women who are older and have an air of authority. It doesn’t mean they’re masculine, but just that they’re powerful and good-looking.
It’s possible to use “beautiful” for men, but it often has a homosexual connotation.
Resumindo: Se um dia voce for visitar Londres e ver a querida Rainha, pode dizer que ela é handsome. E seu alguém te chamar de beautiful, seja educado e responda que voce não o é.
